Deion Sanders Opens Up About Post-Cancer Health: “Thank God I Depend on Depends”

In a candid interview with Good Morning America, the NFL legend and Colorado head coach reflected on life after beating cancer, revealing the daily battles that came after the victory.
“Now I got different battles. I’m not just battling the football team across from me. I’m battling peeing every night,” Sanders told Michael Strahan, managing to keep a sense of humor in the midst of a tough recovery.
Sanders joked about his reliance on adult protection:
“Thank God that I depend on Depends. It seems like a cliché but it’s the truth. I never would have thought, but I really, really do. And I’m trying to like, ‘Okay, doc, am I going to get better? ’Cause I’m waking up like my grandson, you know?’”
Sanders also spoke openly about having two toes amputated due to blood clots — a condition he’s been dealing with since his surgery.
“Even getting up every day, I got eight toes. I mean, I’m hurting,” he said. “When I’m going through a game, I got to wear certain type of shoes, bottoms to make sure that my feet are not just going crazy by the fourth quarter.”
Back in the summer, Sanders held a press conference where he joyfully shared he was cancer-free, thanking God for his recovery while acknowledging the lasting changes to his body.
“The process wasn’t easy. You have no idea how good God has been to me,” he said at the time.
Despite the personal nature of his health challenges — including bladder control issues and a 25-pound weight loss during treatment — Sanders refuses to let embarrassment silence him.
“It’s just totally different, and I know there’s a lot of people out there going through what I am going through and dealing with what I am dealing with,” he said. “Let’s stop being ashamed of it and let’s deal with it. And let’s deal with it head-on.”
Even while facing the realities of recovery, Coach Prime’s message remains powerful: strength is found in honesty, and humor can be a form of resilience.
