NBC Fires Teams of Journalists Focused on Marginalized Communities, Axing NBC Out, NBC BLK, & Other Identity-Based Staff

Written by on 10/16/2025

NBC News has announced another major round of layoffs, cutting 150 employees and dismantling several of its identity-focused editorial teams, including NBC BLK, NBC Asian America, NBC Latino, and NBC OUT, which covered LGBTQ+ issues nationwide.

The news, confirmed Wednesday (Oct. 15), comes amid a larger restructuring effort across NBC’s news division.

Coverage to Continue — But With Far Fewer Staff

According to The Wrap, NBC says it still plans to publish stories for those specific communities. However, the company may retain only up to five staffers to handle that coverage within the broader newsroom.

The cuts amount to about 7% of NBC News operations and 2% of the overall NBCU News Group workforce.

Layoffs Follow MSNBC Split and Industry Pressures

This marks NBC’s second wave of layoffs this year — following 40 job cuts in January — as MSNBC formally separates from NBC and the industry faces steep advertising and streaming challenges.

Impacted employees will receive severance packages, 60 days’ notice, subsidized benefits, and outplacement support as part of the company’s transition plan.

While the network insists the coverage of underrepresented communities will continue, critics and media advocates warn the loss of dedicated teams could diminish the depth and visibility of stories spotlighting communities of color and LGBTQ+ issues.
