Boston Public Schools (BPS) will be in the spotlight on Tuesday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m. for the city’s first-ever “State of the Schools” address, taking place at Josiah Quincy Upper School in Chinatown. The event will celebrate the achievements, resilience, and ambitions of Boston’s students while highlighting the work being done across schools to support every learner.
The address will focus on students’ progress, initiatives that enrich learning, and programs designed to help young people overcome pandemic-related challenges.
Recent MCAS and state accountability results show that while students are making gains, many are still striving to reach pre-pandemic academic levels—a challenge that educators and school communities are addressing with innovative approaches and targeted support.
Students from across BPS will be showcased for their accomplishments in academics, arts, athletics, and community engagement. From coding clubs and science fairs to student-led service projects and performances, the city’s youth are demonstrating creativity, leadership, and determination. These programs underscore the commitment of Boston’s schools to not only educate but also empower students to thrive in and beyond the classroom.
Superintendent Mary Skipper emphasized the importance of centering students in these discussions:
“Our school communities are committed to ensuring every student has access to the resources and guidance needed to reach their full potential. This address is an opportunity to celebrate student achievements, amplify their voices, and reaffirm our commitment to creating learning environments that uplift and inspire every child.”
The event will also outline BPS initiatives aimed at providing high-quality instruction, social-emotional support, and enrichment programs that foster growth for students of all ages. By putting students at the center, Boston aims to strengthen its public school system and ensure that every child has the opportunity to succeed.
The “State of the Schools” address will be streamed live on the City of Boston’s website, boston.gov, giving families, educators, and community members the chance to hear directly about the accomplishments and goals of Boston’s students.
