Boston Preliminary Election: What You Need To Know Before Hitting The Polls

Boston voters, tomorrow is Preliminary Municipal Election Day — Tuesday, September 9, 2025. Polls will be open citywide from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

This election will narrow down the field for the November 4 General Municipal Election. Here’s what’s on the line:

  • Mayor: The top two candidates will advance.

  • District City Council: The top two candidates move on (no preliminaries in Districts 3, 6, 8, and 9).

  • At-Large City Council: The top eight candidates will make it to the general election.

Voting Options

In-person on Election Day – Find your polling location and check your registration status online.
Early Voting – Ended September 5.
Vote-by-Mail & Absentee Ballots – If you already have one, it must be received by 8 p.m. on Election Day. Drop it at one of the city’s 22 secure drop boxes or deliver it to the Election Department at City Hall.

⚠️ Important: Ballots cannot be returned at polling places. If your ballot hasn’t moved in the “Track My Ballot” system, you should plan to vote in person.

Accessibility & Language

  • All polling locations are wheelchair accessible.

  • Printed ballots available in English/Spanish, English/Chinese, and English/Vietnamese.

  • Language interpreters available on request.

  • AutoMark Voter Assist Terminals will be available for voters with disabilities.

New This Year

Boston is expanding Poll Pads electronic check-in devices to all 275 precincts. These tablets make check-in faster, but the process remains the same: check in, get your paper ballot, fill it out, and cast your vote.
