Boston Preliminary Election: What You Need To Know Before Hitting The Polls

Boston voters, tomorrow is Preliminary Municipal Election Day — Tuesday, September 9, 2025. Polls will be open citywide from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

This election will narrow down the field for the November 4 General Municipal Election. Here’s what’s on the line:

  • Mayor: The top two candidates will advance.

  • District City Council: The top two candidates move on (no preliminaries in Districts 3, 6, 8, and 9).

  • At-Large City Council: The top eight candidates will make it to the general election.


Voting Options

In-person on Election Day – Find your polling location and check your registration status online.
Early Voting – Ended September 5.
Vote-by-Mail & Absentee Ballots – If you already have one, it must be received by 8 p.m. on Election Day. Drop it at one of the city’s 22 secure drop boxes or deliver it to the Election Department at City Hall.

⚠️ Important: Ballots cannot be returned at polling places. If your ballot hasn’t moved in the “Track My Ballot” system, you should plan to vote in person.


Accessibility & Language

  • All polling locations are wheelchair accessible.

  • Printed ballots available in English/Spanish, English/Chinese, and English/Vietnamese.

  • Language interpreters available on request.

  • AutoMark Voter Assist Terminals will be available for voters with disabilities.


New This Year

Boston is expanding Poll Pads electronic check-in devices to all 275 precincts. These tablets make check-in faster, but the process remains the same: check in, get your paper ballot, fill it out, and cast your vote.

Results

Unofficial results will start coming in late Tuesday night. The first numbers reported will include ballots cast in person and most early voting/mail-in ballots. Absentee ballots that arrive late on Election Day will be counted after polls close.
