At first, Charles Neblett rejected the decision to affix a singing group. He had been working in the Mississippi Delta in 1961 serving to with the daunting job of registering Black residents to vote.

However Neblett listened as Bob Moses, a subject secretary for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in Mississippi, defined the mission.
