Coco Gauff Takes Wuhan Open Title in All-American Final Against Pegula

Written by on 10/13/2025

Coco Gauff is closing her 2025 season with a statement win. The 21-year-old star defeated fellow American Jessica Pegula 6-4, 7-5 to capture the Wuhan Open championship on Sunday, marking her second title of the year and the 11th of her career.

Gauff trailed 3-5 in the second set but mounted a fearless comeback, holding serve and breaking Pegula to love for 5-5. Pegula then missed a crucial forehand volley at the net on match point, and Gauff sealed the victory with a clean forehand winner.

“Winning every match in straight sets, I don’t know if I’ve done that before on a title run,” Gauff said post-match. “I just felt like I was really proud of what I accomplished this week, regardless of the result today.”

This was the seventh career meeting between the two Americans but their first clash in a final. Pegula still leads their head-to-head 4–3, and the pair has also shared success as a doubles team on the WTA Tour.

Gauff became the second American to win Wuhan after Venus Williams in 2015. Pegula, who upset World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals, missed her chance at a 10th career title.

“When I came on tour, you were one of the first people to be nice to me and welcome me with open arms,” Gauff told Pegula during the trophy ceremony. “It’s great to finally play in a final against you. I hope for many more.”

Pegula returned the respect, adding:

“We’ve spent a lot of time together and, even though I’m a bit older, I always admire and respect her so much. She’s just so mature for her age.”

Gauff now improves to 11–3 in career finals, while Pegula falls to 9–11. With this victory, Gauff strengthens her position at No. 3 in the world rankings and continues to build momentum heading into the year-end championships.
