Did You Know? Your Boston Public Library Card Comes With Crazy Benefits

Written by on 09/04/2025

Your Boston Public Library (BPL) card is more than just a ticket to books — it’s an all-access pass to some of the city’s best experiences. As the second-largest library system in the country, the BPL is all about learning, creativity, and community. But here’s the kicker: some of its best perks go way beyond reading.

Students can use their Boston Public Schools ID cards to obtain a pre-registered BPL library card, granting them access to all services offered by the BPL at its 26 locations. This initiative makes it easier for students to access library books, technology, services, and more. Learn more: http://ow.ly/RTeq50FmXcA

And yes, you don’t even have to live in Boston to get one. If you’re a Massachusetts resident, just bring a photo ID and proof of residency to any BPL branch and you’re set. Once you’ve got your card in hand, here’s what you unlock:

Free & Discounted Museum Passes

Take in culture without emptying your wallet. BPL cardholders can snag free or discounted admission to local favorites like the Museum of Fine Arts, the New England Aquarium, the Mapparium, and more. You can reserve one pass every 30 days — a perfect way to explore Boston’s arts and history scene on the cheap.

Free Parking at State Parks

That’s right, free parking. With the library’s DCR ParksPass, you can park at over 50 state park facilities that usually charge a day fee. More money for snacks on your hike.

Printing Credits

Need to print? No problem. It’s 20¢ a page for black-and-white and 60¢ for color — but every cardholder also gets $20 in free print credits every month. That’s plenty for those last-minute school, work, or travel docs.

Notary Services

Forget hunting down a notary. The BPL’s Central Library and select branches offer on-site notary services — just one more way the library’s got your back.

Movies, Music & More

Sure, you can borrow books. But you can also stream movies, music, and audiobooks with Libby, Hoopla, and Kanopy. Or try something new from the Library of Things — borrow a telescope, a ukulele, or even a bird-watching kit. Perfect for testing out hobbies before you commit.

With 25 neighborhood branches and endless programming, your BPL card isn’t just about books — it’s about unlocking the city. From museum days to outdoor adventures to community resources, the possibilities are endless. Here is a list of notable Boston Public Library branches: Adams Street, Allston, Back Bay, Brighton, Charlestown, Chinatown, Codman Square, Connolly (Jamaica Plain), Dorchester, East Boston, Egleston, Fields Corner, Hyde Park, Jamaica Plain, Lower Mills, Mattapan, North End, Parker Hill, Roslindale, Roxbury, South Boston, South End, Uphams Corner, West End, and West Roxbury.
