MENDON, N.Y. (AP) — Three Nationwide Guard members on a coaching flight had been killed Wednesday when their helicopter crashed in a farmer’s area in western New York.

The craft, a UH-60 Black Hawk medical evacuation helicopter, crashed round 6:30 p.m. in Mendon, New York, a rural city south of Rochester, officers stated.

The circumstances had been underneath investigation. The Federal Aviation Administration stated it might participate.

Pictures of the crash scene posted by native information media confirmed the plane wreckage burning on a snow-covered area.

The helicopter flew out of the Military Aviation Assist Facility at Rochester Worldwide Airport, and was assigned to C Firm of the first Battalion, 171st Common Assist Aviation Battalion, based on Eric Durr, public affairs director of the New York State Division of Navy and Naval Affairs.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo stated flags on state buildings could be lowered to half-staff on Thursday to pay tribute to the troops.

“Nationwide Guard members are our citizen troopers who voluntarily serve and defend each right here and overseas, and I prolong prayers and condolences from all New Yorkers to the household, family members and fellow troopers of those honorable heroes,” he stated in an announcement.

Monroe County Sheriff Todd Baxter stated at a information convention that witnesses who referred to as 911 reported listening to the sounds of an engine sputtering and stated the plane was flying very low.

There have been no survivors of the crash, he stated.

Baxter referred to as the three guard members who perished “nice People.”

“Hold them in your minds and your prayers,” he stated.
