Lupita Nyong’o Narrates Her Award-Winning Kids Book ‘Sulwe’

Lupita Nyong’o is palms on on the subject of her work.

The Us actress revealed she’s narrated an audiobook of her award-winning 2019 youngsters’s e book Sulwe, in accordance with PEOPLE.

The story is about 5-year-old Sulwe, a woman who has the darkest pores and skin in her household, and needs to be lovely like her mom and sister.

Along with her identify that means “star,” the younger lady takes a magical journey via the night time sky and learns to understand her magnificence.

“Listening to a e book learn aloud is such a private, intimate technique to expertise the characters and story,” Nyong’o tells PEOPLE. “I needed to relate the audiobook for Sulwe myself with the intention to deliver to life the characters as I had imagined them in my head when writing the e book.”

Nyong’o says the character of Mama is impressed by her personal, who makes use of “heat, calm and compassion” to information her to this present day.

The audiobook version of Sulwe is slated for a February 23 release through Listening Library.

Sulwe earned a Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor and the NAACP Picture Award for Excellent Kids’s Literary Work. It was illustrated by Vashti Harrison and impressed by Nyong’o’s personal experiences with colorism.

“Though colorism is a heavy subject,” she stated throughout a 2019 interview with PEOPLE. “It was necessary to me that Sulwe’s story have heat, whimsy and exist in a land of desires.”
