Dorchester Residents Celebrate $4 Million Makeover of Walsh Playground

The Dorchester community came out in full force this week to celebrate the grand reopening of Walsh Playground, a neighborhood favorite that’s just gotten a $4 million glow-up. After months of construction, the upgraded park in Lower Mills is officially open — complete with new play equipment, a splash pad, revamped courts, and more space for neighbors to gather, play, and unwind.
For longtime residents, the transformation means more than new turf and swings — it’s a community win years in the making.
“This is what happens when neighbors come together and make their voices heard,” said Representative Brandy Fluker-Reid, who joined families at the ribbon-cutting. “This park reflects the needs and hopes of the families who helped shape it.”
What’s New at Walsh Playground
The renovation brings a little something for everyone. The park now features:
-
A competition softball field and multipurpose field
-
Refreshed basketball and half courts
-
A new tennis and pickleball court
-
Colorful, modern play areas for kids ages 2–12
-
A splash pad for cooling off on hot summer days
-
Walking and woodland paths, shaded seating, and café tables for relaxation
Even longtime community favorites, like the sledding hill, were preserved after residents voiced their love for the spot during design meetings.
Built by the Community, for the Community
Designers and city teams worked closely with Lower Mills residents, gathering ideas through public meetings and surveys that began in 2023. That collaboration shaped everything from the playground’s layout to the court designs.
“Every community deserves a great park,” said City Councilor Brian Worrell. “Walsh Playground is proof that when we invest in green space, we invest in the health, happiness, and pride of our neighborhoods.”
Local coach Ann Walsh, who runs softball programs with ADSL and RBI, said the new field will have a big impact on local youth.
“I can’t wait to see the first time a girl cranks a homer over that new outfield fence,” she said. “This is a park for the next generation.”
The project was designed by CBA Landscape Architects and built by R.A.D. Sports, funded through the City’s Capital Plan and a $500,000 state PARC grant.
Residents can already be seen taking full advantage — from parents pushing strollers to kids running through the splash pad and teens shooting hoops under the new lights.
