Republican Lawmaker Seeks To Rename Black Lives Matter Plaza To Honor of Charlie Kirk

Written by on 12/12/2025

Conservative Congresswoman Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) has introduced new legislation (Dec. 10) that would rename Black Lives Matter Plaza in Washington, D.C., after assassinated conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The move marks the latest Republican effort to memorialize Kirk, who has already been honored with a street in California and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Earlier this year, both the House and Senate passed resolutions recognizing Kirk’s life and legacy shortly after his assassination. In October, Florida Senator Rick Scott also pushed a proposal to rename a street near the White House “Charlie Kirk Way.”

Following President Donald Trump’s return to office, workers removed the massive “Black Lives Matter” street mural on 16th Street—just one block north of the White House—leaving the area a blank slate. Mace says that makes the plaza the right place to honor Kirk.

“Three months ago, we lost a champion of free speech and a voice for millions of young Americans,” Mace said in a statement. “Charlie Kirk’s assassination was an attack not just on one man, but on the fundamental American principle declaring every citizen has the right to speak freely and engage in civic discourse. By designating this plaza in the heart of our nation’s capital, we ensure Charlie’s legacy and his unwavering commitment to the First Amendment will never be forgotten.”

Whether the bill will receive a vote in the House remains unclear. Its fate in the Senate is even less certain, where it would need Democratic support to advance.

The plaza originated in 2020 amid worldwide protests following the police killing of George Floyd. D.C. officials painted “BLACK LIVES MATTER” in bold yellow lettering across the roadway and later voted to make the name permanent.

Republicans have long pushed back against the plaza and its message, and the signage was dismantled in March shortly after Trump reassumed office.

In announcing her proposal, Mace drew a sharp contrast between the unrest that surrounded Floyd’s killing and the response to Kirk’s death. She described 2020 as a period of “chaos and destruction,” while saying Kirk’s assassination brought “prayer, peace and unity.”
