Written by on August 15, 2020

President Donald Trump, who earlier amplified a racist conspiracy principle about Sen. Kamala Harris’ citizenship, refused Saturday to say whether or not the California-born senator was eligible to turn into vp.

Pressed by a reporter to reply a query on the subject, Trump stated solely that it was “not one thing that bothers me.”

“I’ve nothing to do with that,” he stated on whether or not Harris — a natural-born U.S. citizen with immigrant dad and mom from Jamaica and India — ought to be allowed to run for vp.

“I learn one thing about it, and I’ll say that he’s an excellent lawyer,” Trump added, referring to regulation professor John Eastman, who wrote a controversial Newsweek op-ed that questioned whether or not Harris was entitled to birthright citizenship. (She was.)

“It’s not one thing that bothers me,” Trump stated, including: “It’s not one thing that I’m going to be pursuing. …  If she had an issue, you’ll’ve thought she would’ve been vetted by Sleepy Joe.”

Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden named Harris as his working mate on Tuesday, and he or she is the primary Black and first Asian American vice-presidential contender on a significant social gathering ticket.

Her citizenship and eligibility for the function should not in query. However Trump’s marketing campaign has magnified the racist rhetoric in Eastman’s op-ed ― and Trump himself has questioned whether or not Harris meets the “necessities” to be vp.

Trump’s refusal this week to sentence the birther lies about Harris has echoes of the perimeter conspiracy theories he as soon as pushed about Barack Obama.

Trump, whose personal mom was an immigrant from Scotland, has repeatedly questioned whether or not Obama ― America’s first Black president ― was really a U.S. citizen. Obama was born in Hawaii to a white American mom and a Black Kenyan father. As with Harris, Obama’s citizenship and eligibility for the presidency have by no means been unsure.

Biden’s marketing campaign roundly condemned Trump this week for parroting the birther conspiracy theories about Harris.

“Donald Trump was the nationwide chief of the grotesque, racist birther motion with respect to President Obama and has sought to gas racism and tear our nation aside on each single day of his presidency,” Biden marketing campaign spokesman Andrew Bates informed NBC Information Thursday.

Bates added: “So it’s unsurprising, however no much less abhorrent, that as Trump makes a idiot of himself straining to distract the American folks from the horrific toll of his failed coronavirus response that his marketing campaign and their allies would resort to wretched, demonstrably false lies of their pathetic desperation.”
