Boston Honors “The G.O.A.T” Bill Russell With New Bridge Dedication

Written by on 09/25/2025

Boston paid tribute to a true legend this week. On Wednesday, city and state leaders cut the ribbon on the brand-new William Felton “Bill” Russell Bridge, officially renaming the North Washington Bridge in honor of the Celtics icon and civil rights activist.

The $200 million project connects Charlestown and the North End, sitting right in the shadow of TD Garden — the same arena where Russell cemented his place as one of the greatest athletes in history.

“Today, we honor someone, Bill Russell, who simply made us better in every possible way,” said Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey. “When he stood up to racism, he stood up for civil rights for all of us. When he invested in businesses that served and uplifted the Black community, he made us better.”

Russell’s wife, family, and members of the Celtics organization — including legends who once played by his side — were all in attendance for the emotional ceremony. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu added a personal touch, recalling how her son once called Russell his hero for a school project.

Russell’s impact goes far beyond the basketball court. He won 11 championships in 13 seasons, became the first Black head coach in major U.S. sports, and marched alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The newly renamed bridge not only carries his name but also represents progress. It features the city’s first dedicated bus lane, improved landscaping, and even runs along Boston’s iconic Freedom Trail.

Bill Russell passed away in 2022 at the age of 88, but his legacy continues to shape Boston — and now, it’s written into the city’s very streets.
