‘Sit this One Out Nicki’: Nigerians Tell Nicki Minaj After She Praises Donald Trump On Discredited Christian Persecution Claim

Written by on 11/03/2025

Nicki Minaj found herself in the center of controversy after sharing former U.S. President Donald Trump’s statement claiming Nigeria is a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged Christian persecution — a post that ignited fierce debate across Nigerian social media.

Trump’s message, which the rapper reposted to her X account, alleged that “Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria” and blamed “Radical Islamists” for “mass slaughter.”

Minaj added her own reflection, writing:

“Reading this made me feel a deep sense of gratitude. We live in a country where we can freely worship God. No group should ever be persecuted for practising their religion. We don’t have to share the same beliefs in order for us to respect each other.”

That comment quickly drew backlash from Nigerians who accused her of amplifying a misleading narrative about the nation’s internal conflicts. Many argued that the violence in Nigeria stems from land disputes, terrorism, and organized crime, not religious persecution.

One user fired back:

“Suddenly there’s a campaign about something that happened in Nigeria, and they want to blame Muslims. The funny thing is, Nicki Minaj suddenly cares about Christianity but stays silent about what’s happening to Christians in Gaza. This seems orchestrated.”

Another user, @minzdyna, pushed back with facts:

“Nicki Minaj is misinformed. Nigeria has around 240 million people — half are Christians. There are huge mega-churches with 100,000 seats. There’s no Christian genocide, there’s a security issue affecting everyone.”

Others outright rejected Trump’s claims.

“There is no ethnic or religious group being persecuted in Nigeria,” wrote @kawugarba. “We have Boko Haram terrorists who kill both Muslims and Christians — often attacking mosques.”

Trump’s full statement claimed “thousands of Christians are being killed” and urged the U.S. not to “stand by while such atrocities are happening.”

Despite the backlash, Minaj’s post also drew support — particularly from Trump supporters and fans who praised her for “speaking up” on global religious freedom.

The controversy highlights the ongoing tension between celebrity influence, misinformation, and geopolitics — especially when global stars wade into local issues far from home.
