Miguel Says His Best Album Is Still Being Held Hostage — And He’s Ready to Walk Away From His Label to Get It Out

Written by on 12/11/2025

Miguel’s long-awaited return with Caos might feel like the big comeback moment fans spent eight years waiting for — but the singer says the real masterpiece is still locked away, and the only thing stopping its release is his label.

In a new interview with Genius, the Grammy winner made it clear: the drought is over, and he has another fully finished album sitting in the vault right now. And according to him, it outshines Caos.

Should fans prepare for another multi-year silence?

“No,” Miguel said without hesitation. If he had it his way, the next album would already have a release date.

“If it was up to me, I’d put another album out before the tour starts.”

But RCA Records — and the contract he’s been battling against — won’t allow it. Under his current deal, he’s barred from dropping new music until late next year. And for Miguel, the issue isn’t just timing; it’s the principle.

“I would sooner release it independently than to allow them to pick up the deal without it being a fair deal,” Miguel said.
“And it’s not a fair deal, and I’m happy to go on record about that.”

Miguel says that while there are people within RCA who genuinely want to support him, the system itself is broken — designed to keep artists quiet, compliant, and grateful for scraps. He’s done with that.

Miguel owns his masters now. He understands his leverage. And he’s making it clear that the next phase of his career will be built on independence.

“There’s absolutely things that need to happen that I would prefer to happen as an independent artist.”

But even in the middle of label drama, the release of Caos triggered a tidal wave of emotion he didn’t expect. After being gone for so long, the reception from peers and mentors hit differently.

“I’ve gotten more notes about this album … than I’ve ever gotten for any of my projects,” Miguel said. “It’s been really, really dope, and it’s a really endearing and reassuring thing.”

As he looks ahead, Miguel says the next decade of his career won’t just be about himself — it’ll be about protecting other artists from the very machine he’s fighting now.

“My next 10 [years] is me really taking what I’ve learned and hopefully educating and stewarding other artists.”

And if his unreleased album is truly stronger than Caos?

Fans might end up witnessing Miguel’s most liberating — and most revolutionary — chapter yet.
