New Jersey Police Chief Indicted on Kidnapping, Domestic Violence Charges in Boston

Written by on 12/21/2025

BOSTON, MA — A New Jersey police chief has been indicted in Massachusetts on multiple felony charges stemming from an alleged domestic violence incident at a Boston hotel earlier this year.

Carmen Veneziano, the police chief of Totowa, New Jersey, was formally charged Thursday with one count of kidnapping and three counts of domestic assault and battery, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.

Prosecutors allege that Veneziano assaulted and unlawfully confined a woman overnight on Sept. 14 inside a hotel room in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood. Details of the alleged incident remain limited ahead of his court appearance.

Veneziano was arrested by New Jersey authorities on Friday and is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Boston. Court records did not immediately list an attorney representing him.

Totowa Mayor John Coiro said he was notified of the charges on Friday and moved quickly to suspend Veneziano without pay.

“While I did not see the exact charges in writing, the Prosecutor’s Office did relay to me that these charges were serious in nature and considered felonies,” Coiro said in a statement.

The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office said additional details will be released during Veneziano’s arraignment.

The case places renewed scrutiny on law enforcement leadership and accountability, as a sitting police chief now faces serious criminal allegations outside his home state.
