Billboard Hip-Hop Exclusive: The World According to JoeyEaz
Written by b87fm on 07/30/2025
Billboard Hip Hop: Joey, you’ve been grinding since middle school. Walk us back to those early days—what was it like discovering music as a kid at Riverdale Academy?
JoeyEaz: Man, it was everything. I remember being just a kid in the Bronx, surrounded by so much noise, culture, and energy. At Riverdale Academy, music became my way to speak without yelling. Those talent shows? They were my first stages. I wasn’t just rapping—I was learning who I was, figuring out how my voice could move people. The love I got back then gave me the confidence I carry with me now.
Billboard Hip Hop: You’ve always repped the Bronx, but you also moved through other parts of NYC like Washington Heights for high school. How did each borough shape your sound?
JoeyEaz: Each borough gave me a different rhythm. The Bronx gave me the grit—the rawness of hip-hop. Uptown, especially Washington Heights, gave me that Dominican pulse, the reggaeton, the soul. Being around that melting pot of sounds and cultures taught me to blend, to bend, and to never be boxed in.
Billboard Hip Hop: You’re known for mastering multiple genres—Hip-Hop, Pop, Reggaeton, Techno, Rap. That’s not easy. What drives your genre versatility?
JoeyEaz: Honestly? Emotions. Every genre carries a different energy. When I’m feeling nostalgic, I lean into pop. If I want to move people physically, I hit reggaeton or techno. Hip-hop is my core—it’s where I speak my truth, tell my story. I never force it. I just follow the vibe, and it guides the sound.
Billboard Hip Hop: Your fans say you have this crazy ability to make them feel like you’re talking just to them. Is that intentional?
JoeyEaz: Absolutely. That’s my entire approach. I don’t make music to be flashy—I make music to connect. I know what pain feels like. I know what hope feels like. I know what it’s like to grind for something no one else sees. So when I write, I imagine I’m speaking to someone who needs to hear exactly what I’m saying. That connection? That’s real.
Billboard Hip Hop: Let’s talk live performances. You’re active in shows all over NYC—open mics, special events. How does performing live feed your energy as an artist?
JoeyEaz: There’s nothing like the stage. It’s spiritual. Every borough I perform in—whether it’s a tiny mic night in Brooklyn or a packed-out show in the Bronx—it reminds me why I do this. People dance, cry, vibe. That feedback? That love? It’s what keeps me writing, keeps me pushing.
Billboard Hip Hop: What’s your creative process like in the studio? Is it freestyle, written, emotional, technical?
JoeyEaz: It’s emotional first, then technical. I go in with a feeling. If I’m angry, if I’m inspired, if I’m in love—I start from there. I’ll freestyle until I find the pocket, then go back and craft the bars. I’m all about storytelling, but the delivery’s gotta hit. I want every line to live in your chest.
Billboard Hip Hop: Social media has been a big part of your rise. How are you approaching it differently than others?
JoeyEaz: I treat social media like a mixtape. Every post is content, but every content piece is music-driven. Freestyles, snippets, raw moments in the studio—that’s what people want. Not polished—real. I give them that. My social media is just an extension of my stage.
Billboard Hip Hop: What are some of the most surprising or hidden talents fans don’t know you have?
JoeyEaz: [Laughs] I’m actually crazy with melodies. People think I’m just a rapper, but I can sing, harmonize, even produce a little. I’m also big on writing for other artists. I’ve written hooks for singers, pop artists, even techno DJs. I love building the whole record, not just the bars.
Billboard Hip Hop: Where do you see JoeyEaz five years from now?
JoeyEaz: Global. Touring. Inspiring kids that came from the same corners I did. I want to build a label, help other Dominican and Latino artists get their shine. But above all, I just want to keep making music that matters.
Billboard Hip Hop: Final words to your fans?
JoeyEaz: Thank you for riding with me. Every stream, every comment, every pull-up to a show—it means the world. I’m not done yet. We’re just getting started. One song at a time, we’re connecting the world. Let’s keep going.
