Boston Braces for Dangerous Heat Wave as City Declares Emergency

Mayor Michelle Wu has declared a heat emergency for Boston starting Monday as meteorologists predict three consecutive days of dangerous temperatures reaching into the 90s.

The emergency declaration will remain in effect through Wednesday, triggered by Boston’s threshold of two or more days with heat index readings of 95 degrees or higher.

“Keeping our residents and families healthy and safe during extreme heat is our number one priority,” Mayor Wu announced. “The city stands ready to support every neighborhood and resident. We’re asking everyone to look out for themselves, check on neighbors, and take every precaution to stay cool and protected.”

Cooling Resources Available:

  • Splash pads and public pools open citywide. For details on locations and hours, click here.
  • BCYF Cooling Centers at all Boston Centers for Youth & Families locations
  • Boston Public Library branches offering air-conditioned refuge throughout the emergency period

Health officials urge residents to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and seek immediate medical attention for signs of heat-related illness including dizziness, nausea, or confusion.

The heat emergency reflects growing concerns about extreme weather events and their impact on public health, particularly for vulnerable populations including elderly residents, young children, and those without adequate air conditioning.
