Boston Ranks 17th for Best New Year’s Eve Destinations — High on Fun, Low on Affordability

Written by on 12/09/2025

Boston once again proved it knows how to throw a party—just not a cheap one. A new study from WalletHub ranks the city 17th among the 100 best U.S. destinations to celebrate New Year’s Eve in 2025.

The report analyzed cities across 26 metrics, from nightlife and safety to weather and affordability. Boston beat out places like Seattle and Denver thanks to its walkability, thriving food culture, and signature holiday traditions.

The city landed No. 1 for affordable fine dining, No. 5 for walkability, yet 90th in overall costs & affordability—a near-bottom finish that confirms what locals already know: Boston delivers the vibes, but your wallet will feel it.

At the center of the celebration is First Night Boston, the city’s long-running cultural takeover of Copley Square and Back Bay. With massive ice sculptures, live performances, art installations, and fireworks over Boston Harbor, it remains one of the East Coast’s most iconic and family-friendly countdown experiences.

Weather could be another win this year. The study ranked Boston first in forecasted precipitation, signaling a likely dry and brisk night—ideal for party-hopping on foot.

Safety landed Boston in the mid-tier at 33rd for neighborhood security, reflecting ongoing downtown initiatives to keep crowds safe during major events.

Experts cited in the study say affordability is shaping holiday travel decisions as inflation continues to affect budgets. Luana Nanu of the University of South Florida notes that travelers are steering away from overpriced trips and choosing regional drives instead—making Boston especially attractive to New Englanders who can skip airfare. Travel analyst Linchi Kwok of California State Polytechnic University, Pomona adds that early planning or choosing less-crowded destinations remains key for savings.

Still, New Year’s in Boston doesn’t come cheap. Restaurants roll out premium prix fixe menus, and hotel prices jump in late December. But from the ice sculptures to the midnight fireworks, Boston’s blend of charm, culture, and walkability keeps it among the top places in the country to welcome 2025.
