Democrat Mikie Sherrill Wins New Jersey Governor’s Race, Defeats Trump-Backed Opponent

Written by on 11/04/2025

Democrat Mikie Sherrill has been elected governor of New Jersey, defeating Jack Ciattarelli, a Trump-aligned Republican, in a closely watched race testing Democrats’ grip on the traditionally blue state.

Voting was briefly disrupted by unfounded bomb threats emailed to polling sites in seven counties, forcing temporary closures and a one-hour extension at some locations.

Sherrill, a former Navy helicopter pilot and federal prosecutor, campaigned on resisting Trump’s influence and addressing the state’s high living costs, promising to freeze utility rate hikes. Ciattarelli, a businessman and former legislator, argued New Jersey needed to “break free” from eight years of Democratic control.

Economic concerns — from inflation to soaring property taxes — dominated the race, reflecting nationwide frustrations. Sherrill’s win makes her New Jersey’s second female governor, joining Christine Todd Whitman.
