Sean “Diddy” Combs is preparing to speak in court for the first time since his conviction on prostitution-related charges. The Bad Boy mogul will address the judge at his sentencing hearing on Friday, October 3rd, in what’s expected to be one of the most emotional and closely watched moments of the case.
According to TMZ, Diddy plans to deliver his own allocution, sharing how he’s changed during his time at the Metropolitan Detention Center. This comes after Judge Arun Subramanian denied his request to overturn the conviction.
Diddy’s attorney, Teny Geragos, told the court:
“The sentencing proceeding holds significant importance for Mr. Combs. He wishes to appear before the Court, address Your Honor, and allocute in the most dignified and respectful fashion possible.”
But Diddy won’t be the only one speaking. Several of his alleged victims will also have the chance to testify about why they believe he doesn’t deserve leniency. One woman, testifying under the pseudonym “Mia,” said she still fears retaliation if Diddy is released.
“While the jury did not seem to understand or believe that I engaged in freak-offs because of the force and coercion the defendant used against me, I know that is the truth,” Mia wrote. “I am so scared that if he walks free, his first actions will be swift retribution towards me and others who spoke up about his abuse at trial.”
Prosecutors have recommended a sentence of 11 years and 3 months, while Diddy’s defense team is pushing for the lightest possible outcome. His lawyers have also asked that he be allowed to wear street clothes during the hearing instead of a jail jumpsuit.
It’s unclear if Cassie — who recently submitted her own powerful statement to the court — will appear in person.
All eyes will be on Friday’s hearing to see how the judge rules, and what Diddy has to say for himself.
