Ella Mai is offering a rare glimpse into her personal life, publicly speaking about her son with NBA star Jayson Tatum for the first time.
In a new interview posted by KISS XTRA on Monday, December 15, the Grammy-winning R&B singer reflected on her recent hiatus from music while discussing her 3 EP. When DJ Ace asked how the break treated her, Ella revealed that becoming a mother reshaped everything.
The British crooner admitted that motherhood wasn’t something she once envisioned for herself.
“I wasn’t really a maternal person who dreamed of having kids,” she shared. “But now, I couldn’t imagine my life without him.”
When asked whether her son might lean toward music or sports, Ella smiled at the possibilities.
“It’s giving a little bit of both right now,” she said. “We might have a little singing hooper on our hands.”
“Yes, there’s cameras everywhere but if you’re intentional, it’s not that hard”

Ella Mai and Boston Celtics superstar Jayson Tatum first sparked speculation about their child earlier this year when the singer was seen with a baby bump during celebrations following the Celtics’ NBA Finals win. The couple worked deliberately to keep the pregnancy private, avoiding public confirmation for months.

Their son wasn’t formally introduced to the world until the 2024 Summer Olympics, when Ella and the baby appeared briefly in the background as Tatum and the USA Men’s Basketball Team celebrated their gold medal victory.
“There are cameras everywhere,” Ella explained, “but if you’re intentional with the way that you move, it’s not that hard to not be seen.”
In the interview, Ella also touched on her Did You Miss Me? Tour and looked ahead to her upcoming album, Do You Still Love Me?, signaling that while motherhood has shifted her priorities, music remains firmly in her future.
For fans, it was a rare and intimate moment from an artist who has largely kept her private life off-limits—one that showed a new chapter unfolding quietly, but confidently.
