Former Celtics Star Paul Pierce Arrested On Suspicion Of DUI

Written by on 10/12/2025

Former NBA legend Paul Pierce was arrested late Tuesday night on suspicion of driving under the influence after being found asleep behind the wheel on a busy Los Angeles freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Authorities say CHP officers responded around 10:40 p.m. to a multi-vehicle crash on northbound U.S. Highway 101. After clearing most of the scene an hour later, they spotted a Range Rover SUV stopped in active traffic lanes just south of the crash site.

“When officers approached, they found the driver, later identified as Paul Pierce, asleep at the wheel,” CHP said in a statement.

Officers conducted a DUI investigation after noticing signs of impairment. Pierce, 47, was arrested on a misdemeanor DUI charge and booked at the CHP Central Los Angeles station. His case will be forwarded to the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office for review.

Pierce has not made a public statement addressing the allegations directly, though he did post on Threads the following day:

“Imagine being stuck in stand still traffic for 45 mins and falling asleep… I’m old, I’m tired, and I fell asleep. I’m good y’all thanks for the love.”

He did not address the DUI claim in that post.

A Storied Career with Boston Roots

Paul Pierce’s name still rings out across Boston. He spent 15 of his 19 NBA seasons with the Boston Celtics, leading them to a 2008 NBA Championship and earning Finals MVP honors. The 10-time All-Star later played for the Nets, Wizards, and Clippers before retiring in 2017.

Pierce was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021 and had his jersey retired at TD Garden, forever solidifying his legacy in Boston sports history.

After his playing days, Pierce moved into sports media, cohosting Fox Sports’ talk show Speak until its cancellation in July 2025.

Legal Next Steps

No court date has been announced, and authorities have not confirmed whether a breath or blood test was administered. Legal analysts note Pierce’s statement online could factor into the case, but prosecutors will determine whether there’s enough evidence to file formal charges.

Boston fans, who once called him “The Truth,” are watching this legal battle closely — and hoping the Celtics legend can navigate this off-court chapter with better judgment than he showed on the freeway.
