Former NBA player Courtney Fortson, 37, is facing multiple felony charges after police say he tried to walk out of a local supermarket with more than $1,000 worth of groceries.
According to the KNWA Fox 24, the Lowell Police Department says that the incident occurred on October 14, when a store employee spotted Fortson leaving the self-checkout with a full cart after scanning only $4.48 worth of items. He was arrested on October 23, charged with seven counts of breaking or entering, seven counts of commercial burglary, and one count of theft of property.
Fortson was later released on a $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court in December.
Fortson’s story began with promise. A standout point guard at the University of Arkansas, he built a reputation for his speed and grit but went undrafted in 2010, with scouts citing concerns about his 5’11” frame and high turnover rate.
He launched his professional career overseas, playing in Romania, before earning a G-League spot with the Reno Bighorns, the Sacramento Kings’ affiliate. During the NBA’s 2011 lockout season, Fortson briefly played for both the Los Angeles Clippers and Houston Rockets before returning abroad for successful stints in Russia, Turkey, and China.
