Jasmine Crockett Officially Enters 2026 Texas Senate Race, Instantly Reshaping the Democratic Field

Written by on 12/09/2025

Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett of Dallas is officially in the 2026 U.S. Senate race, ending months of speculation and triggering an immediate shake-up in Texas politics.

Her Monday filing — just hours before the state deadline — came the same day former Rep. Colin Allred bowed out of the Senate contest and redirected his ambitions toward a House run. The timing cleared the lane for Crockett and set the stage for a high-profile Democratic primary to challenge Republican Sen. John Cornyn.

“For too long, Texas has elected Senators who have defended politics as usual and protected the status quo, while Texans pay the price,” Crockett said in a statement. “We’ve had Senators who’ve pushed the American Dream further and further out of reach.”

Crockett officially launched her campaign at an event with supporters, accompanied by a stark campaign video. In it, she stands silent while a past critic mocks her as “low IQ” and sarcastically labels her the Democratic Party’s new star. The message was unmistakable: she’s ready for a bigger fight — and a bigger platform.

“What we need is for me to have a bigger voice,” she told supporters during a 40-minute speech. “We need to make sure that we are going to stop all the hell that is raining down on all of our people.”

The congresswoman, a former civil rights attorney, has become one of the Democratic Party’s most recognizable fighters — known for her sharp debates, unapologetic style, and powerhouse fundraising.

Allred, the party’s 2024 Senate nominee, said he stepped aside to avoid an intraparty battle. He will instead run for a newly drawn, safely blue House seat in the 33rd District.

Crockett will now face state Rep. James Talarico of Austin, whose long-shot candidacy has drawn national interest and a surprising early fundraising surge.

Still, Crockett insists she can win statewide. She cites internal polling that shows a viable path — even in a presidential election year where Texas will again be a key battleground.

Her entry marks a high-risk, high-reward moment for Texas Democrats. If Crockett’s bold, unfiltered approach resonates beyond her base, she could crack the GOP’s decades-long grip on the state. If not, the party may find itself at odds with the very style that has elevated her to national prominence.

Either way, the race for Cornyn’s seat just became one of 2026’s most closely watched political showdowns.
