A Louisiana judge has denied bond for New Orleans rapper Mystikal â real name Michael Lawrence Tyler â following his arrest on first-degree rape and false imprisonment charges. The decision came during a 72-hour hearing in Ascension Parish, where the judge pointed to the strength of the evidence presented, concerns about recidivism, and the alleged victimâs fears.
Courtroom Details Paint a Troubling Picture
Tyler, 51, was taken into custody after a woman told authorities she was assaulted at his Prairieville home. According to arrest records, she had gone there to discuss financial matters when the encounter spiraled out of control.

A sheriffâs detective described the womanâs account as harrowing. She reported that Mystikal accused her of stealing money, then allegedly attacked her â punching, choking, and pulling out her braids â before confiscating her phone and keys so she couldnât leave.
Investigators say Mystikalâs behavior shifted between rage and remorse. At one point, he allegedly apologized, asked her to pray with him, and then forced himself on her.
After the assault, he allegedly demanded she repay money through CashApp. When she wasnât moving fast enough, he briefly regained access to her phone, entered a higher dollar amount, then handed the device back so she could finally leave.
The woman sought medical attention at a Baton Rouge hospital, where a sexual assault exam was conducted. Deputies say her injuries were consistent with her report.
Defense Pushes Back
Mystikalâs attorney, Joel Pearce, criticized the judgeâs decision, saying, âThere was no evidence given on my clientâs part.â Pearce said he intends to pursue a full bond hearing to challenge the stateâs case and request a preliminary examination.
He also disputed the accusations: âHe never threatened her, never choked her.â
Former defense attorney Roy Maughan Jr., who initially requested a $250,000 bond, expressed disappointment but said Tyler may not appeal the ruling.
No Special Treatment, Authorities Say
The Ascension Parish Sheriffâs Office emphasized that Tylerâs celebrity status offers no advantage: âHe wonât get any sympathy or special treatment⊠He will be in general population and incarcerated like anyone else.â
Past Legal Troubles Loom Large
Mystikal has faced similar allegations before. In 2003, he pleaded guilty to sexual battery and extortion and served six years in prison. In 2017, he was indicted on rape and kidnapping charges, though prosecutors ultimately dropped the case after a grand jury declined to re-indict.
The current charges are his most serious yet. Under Louisiana law, first-degree rape carries a mandatory life sentence if convicted.
