LAPD Ends Security Detail for Former VP Kamala Harris

The Los Angeles Police Department has officially ended its special protection for former Vice President Kamala Harris, according to reports from FOX LA.
Earlier this year, President Donald Trump revoked Secret Service protection for Harris. In response, LA Mayor Karen Bass stepped in, assigning LAPD officers to cover Harris during public appearances. That backup is now over.
The move comes after pushback from the Los Angeles Police Protective League, which blasted the mayor’s decision to use city officers for Harris instead of keeping them on crime suppression.
“Pulling police officers from protecting everyday Angelenos to protect a failed presidential candidate who also happens to be a multi-millionaire with multiple homes and who can easily afford to pay for her own security is nuts,” the union said in a fiery statement. “LA taxpayers should not be footing the bill for this ridiculousness.”
The change lands just as Harris prepares for a global book tour to promote her new memoir. While she faced high-level threats during her vice presidency, the Associated Press notes that current Secret Service intelligence hasn’t found any credible risks.
Mayor Bass’ office responded, framing the decision as “another act of political revenge”, adding:
“This puts the former Vice President in danger and I look forward to working with the Governor to make sure Vice President Harris is safe in Los Angeles.”
