Megyn Kelly Blasts Michelle Obama’s New Book “The Look”: “It’s Not a Black Thing — It’s a Woman Thing”

Written by on 11/06/2025

Conservative media personality Megyn Kelly is stirring controversy again — this time using her platform to challenge former First Lady Michelle Obama’s new book, The Look.”

On the November 4 episode of The Megyn Kelly Show, Kelly zeroed in on Obama’s reflections about her appearance and the pressures of being the nation’s first Black First Lady. The book explores Obama’s most talked-about fashion and beauty moments from her time in the White House — and the racial and cultural expectations that came with them.

In The Look,” Obama discusses how societal beauty standards affected her choices, particularly around her hair:

“As women of color, the way our hair naturally grows out of our head is beautiful, but if we struggle to make it look like the standard, that means we are spending thousands of hours and lots of money straightening out what is naturally curly hair,” she writes. “And that takes time out of your life. It costs money.”

Kelly dismissed Obama’s argument outright, calling it exaggerated.

“What she’s saying is she’s bitter because society’s standards, in her view, don’t allow Black women to just walk around with their natural hair,” Kelly said. “That is bull—-. Black women can walk around with whatever hair they want. Only in Michelle Obama’s warped mind do White people not like them unless their hair looks like White hair.”

Kelly argued that grooming and styling pressure isn’t unique to any one race.

“Virtually every woman I know spends a ton of time on her hair,” Kelly added. “It’s not a Black thing — it’s a human thing, and it’s especially a woman thing. But she’s always reducing everything to race.”

She went further, saying Obama’s complaints overlook the shared experience women have with beauty standards across cultures.

“Can you tell the White women? How about the Asians? The Indian women? They all deal with thick, curly, or unruly hair. They use irons, just like you, Michelle — just like everyone else.”

The Look,” released Tuesday, captures the former First Lady’s fashion evolution and the double standards she faced in the public eye — including the media frenzy over her sleeveless dresses.

“Yet when I became First Lady and wore a deep purple V-neck Narciso Rodriguez dress to Barack’s first address to a joint session of Congress, it caused an uproar,” Obama recalls. “It became clear that I was being held to a very different standard.”

Still, Obama closes her reflections on a note of empowerment, writing that many women told her they felt more confident showing their arms after seeing her do it.

“I was honored that those people saw my arms as a symbol of strength,” she concludes.

While “The Look aims to celebrate authenticity and self-expression, Kelly’s fiery rebuttal suggests that the cultural conversation around beauty, race, and womanhood is far from settled.
