Michelle Obama revealed that she and former President Barack Obama were planning to visit Rob and Michele Reiner on the same night the couple was found dead, sharing the emotional detail during an appearance on The Jimmy Kimmel Show.
During the interview, Kimmel asked how long the former First Lady had known the Reiners.
“We’ve known them for many, many years,” Michelle said. “And we were supposed to be seeing them that night, last night. We got the news… And let me just say this—unlike some people—Rob and Michele Reiner are some of the most decent, courageous people you would ever want to know.”

Michelle pushed back strongly against rhetoric that has surrounded the couple in recent days.
“They’re not deranged or crazed,” Michelle continued. “What they have always been are passionate people—in a time when there is not a lot of courage going on.”
She went on to praise the Reiners for their lifelong political activism and deep commitment to family, fairness, and civic engagement.
“They were the kind of people who were ready to put their actions behind what they cared about,” Michelle said. “And they cared about their family, and they cared about this country. They cared about fairness and equity. And that is the truth. I do know them.”

Authorities have confirmed that the Reiners’ son, Nick Reiner, was arrested and booked on murder charges in connection with the deaths. Rob and Michele Reiner reportedly died from stab wounds after first responders arrived at their home following a medical aid call around 3:30 p.m.
In a family statement, relatives asked for privacy during the aftermath of the tragedy.
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner,” the statement read. “We are heartbroken by this sudden loss and ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”
Former President Barack Obama also shared a tribute on X (formerly Twitter), writing that he and Michelle were “heartbroken” by the loss of the longtime friends, praising Rob Reiner’s creative legacy and the couple’s shared belief in justice, compassion, and public service.
