Supreme Court Lets Fed Governor Lisa Cook Keep Her Seat — For Now

The Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook can keep her position at least until justices hear full arguments in January 2026 on whether there’s legal cause to remove her.
That means Cook will remain on the Fed’s seven-member Board of Governors through the end of this year — a crucial stretch where the central bank is expected to approve two more interest rate cuts. She’ll also have a voice at the Fed’s October and December policy meetings, and possibly the January one, according to CNBC.
The case centers on accusations tied to alleged mortgage fraud involving loan applications in Michigan and Georgia — claims Cook has denied. She has not been charged with making false statements.
Her attorneys, Abbe Lowell and Norm Eisen, praised the decision:
“The Court’s decision rightly allows Governor Cook to continue in her role on the Federal Reserve Board, and we look forward to further proceedings consistent with the Court’s order.”
The White House, however, pushed back. Spokesman Kush Desai said Cook was
“lawfully removed… for cause” and added, “We look forward to ultimate victory fater presenting our oral arguments before the Supreme Court in January.”
The Justice Department has argued that blocking President Trump’s effort to remove Cook amounts to “improper judicial interference” with presidential authority.
For now, the Fed itself isn’t weighing in — only noting it will abide by the Court’s rulings.
