Tory Lanez Loses Appeal and Set To Serve Full 10-Year Prison Sentence

Tory Lanez will serve his full 10-year prison sentence after a California appellate panel rejected his bid to overturn his convictions in the 2020 shooting of Megan Thee Stallion.
According to Rolling Stone, a three-judge panel from the California 2nd District Court of Appeals ruled on Nov. 12 that the trial court acted properly in admitting witness testimony, prior statements, and social-media evidence. The decision leaves Lanez’s 2022 felony convictions fully intact.
Lanez — born Daystar Peterson — was convicted of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, carrying a loaded and unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and grossly negligent discharge of a firearm. His attorneys argued that procedural errors and judicial bias tainted the trial. The appellate court disagreed, finding “no grounds for reversal.”
The case stems from a July 2020 incident in which Megan Thee Stallion was shot in the foot after leaving a party at Kylie Jenner’s Hollywood Hills home. The trial and its fallout ignited national conversations about misogynoir, violence in hip-hop, and how Black women are treated within the justice system.
During the trial, Megan recounted the trauma she endured — both from the shooting and from the public scrutiny that followed.
“I was shot. I’ve been turned into some kind of villain and he’s the victim,” she told the jury. “This has messed up my whole life… At my lowest, I thought, ‘I wish he would’ve just shot and killed me rather than have to go through this torture.’”
With the appellate decision now finalized, Lanez’s legal options have narrowed significantly. His team can attempt an appeal to the California Supreme Court, but the main legal avenues for overturning his conviction have effectively closed.
