Angie Stone’s Children File Wrongful Death Lawsuit After Fatal Crash

The family of late soul and R&B legend Angie Stone is taking legal action following the tragic crash that claimed her life earlier this year.
Her children, Diamond Stone and Michael D’Angelo Archer, have filed a lawsuit against a trucking company driver and the truck’s manufacturer, claiming both were responsible for the deadly March accident. The suit was filed Tuesday (Sept. 2) in Gwinnett County, Georgia.
According to the complaint, truck driver Jared S. Wilkerson was speeding northbound on I-65 while “listening to music with headphones” and on his way to deliver a load of sugar. At the time, Angie Stone and her team were traveling in a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van that lost control and overturned, leaving Stone and eight others trapped inside.
Court documents say that while several Good Samaritans were able to help some passengers escape, the tragedy struck when Wilkerson’s tractor-trailer — traveling nearly 70 mph — slammed into the overturned van without ever braking. The impact was described as “extremely severe,” ejecting Stone and pinning her beneath the vehicle.
The lawsuit alleges that the collision mitigation system on the truck also failed to activate, leaving no chance for the passengers inside.
“All nine occupants of the Sprinter van, including Angie Stone, were alive and conscious following the wreck, and began trying to exit the disabled van,” the complaint reads. Angie, however, “remained trapped underneath the van, where she consciously suffered until she succumbed to the fatal injuries.”
Stone’s longtime bandmate Sheila Hopkins survived but sustained serious injuries.
The lawsuit stresses that weather conditions were clear and that Wilkerson’s negligence — not outside factors — led to the tragedy.
Angie Stone, who gave the world timeless hits like “Wish I Didn’t Miss You” and helped shape neo-soul’s sound, passed away at 63. Now, her family is fighting to hold those responsible accountable.
