CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Setti Warren — the former mayor of Newton, respected public servant, and current director of Harvard University’s Institute of Politics — has passed away at age 55. Harvard confirmed his death Sunday (Nov. 2), calling him a leader who “ran toward challenges, not away from them.”
A Newton native and the first Black man ever elected mayor in Massachusetts, Warren broke barriers throughout his career. He served two terms leading his hometown, where he pushed for educational equity, environmental sustainability, and fiscal responsibility.
After leaving office, Warren made a bid for governor of Massachusetts, a campaign he ended early due to funding pressures. But his influence extended far beyond politics — he became a mentor to the next generation of civic leaders through his work at Harvard.
“As a veteran, mayor, and mentor, Setti Warren spent his life serving others,” said Governor Maura Healey. “Above all, he cherished his family and his role as husband and father.”
Before his tenure as mayor, Warren worked in the Clinton White House and served in the U.S. Naval Reserve, underscoring a lifelong commitment to public service.

Tributes flooded social media from those who admired and worked alongside him. CNN’s Abby Phillip wrote, “I’m so devastated by this news. Setti was such a bright light and a dear friend.”
Just emailed with Setti a few days ago. I’m so devastated by this news. I’m praying for his wife and children. Setti was such a bright light and a dear friend. We will miss him so much. https://t.co/8QyDwer45j

Meanwhile, Rep. Ayanna Pressley remembered his optimism: “Setti had so much life left to live, milestones to experience, hearts to touch, and lives to change.”
I am heartbroken to learn of the sudden transition of my dear friend and former Kerry colleague, Setti Warren. There will be plenty of time to remember him as a proud Democrat, dedicated public servant, and convener, but for now I just want to remember the decent, kind, and good… pic.twitter.com/9OlQ1hJg7O

Newton Mayor Ruthanne Fuller honored her predecessor’s dedication: “He served residents in all 13 villages of Newton and worked across divides. He believed deeply in education, sustainability, and innovation — and he kept the city’s finances strong.”
Warren is survived by his wife, Tassy, and their children, Abigail and John. A service honoring his life and legacy will be held at Harvard University, according to the Boston Herald.
His passing marks the loss of a historic figure — one who reshaped local leadership and left behind a legacy rooted in service, progress, and unwavering hope.
