Akon’s Wife Files for Divorce After Nearly 3 Decades of Marriage

After 28 years together, Akon and his wife Tomeka Thiam are officially calling it quits.
According to court documents obtained by TMZ, Thiam filed for divorce on September 12 — just four days before what would have been their 29th wedding anniversary. She cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the split.
The couple shares a 17-year-old daughter, Journey, and Thiam is requesting joint legal custody but wants primary physical custody, giving Akon visitation rights. She’s also asking the court for spousal support — while making sure Akon can’t seek any support from her.
The filing adds another layer of intrigue to Akon’s personal life. Over the years, the hitmaker has spoken openly about practicing polygamy, reportedly having multiple wives and a total of nine children. Back in 2022, he defended the lifestyle, saying it’s rooted in his African culture:
“For me, it looks normal, because it’s culture for us… The flaw that the Western world made is they created all these rules without putting nature into account.”
As of now, Akon has stayed silent on Thiam’s move to legally end their decades-long marriage.
