Shaboozey Defends Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl Halftime Show: “There’s No Better Choice”

Written by on 10/21/2025

Country star Shaboozey is weighing in on one of pop culture’s hottest debates — Bad Bunny headlining the 2025 Super Bowl halftime show. And he’s not holding back.

“I think Bad Bunny’s awesome,” Shaboozey told Billboard while in Austin for a Formula 1 event. “He’s a global superstar, global icon — and an American citizen. There’s no better choice.”

Shaboozey continued, “Any time a Bad Bunny song comes on, the whole place erupts.”

The Monaco hitmaker was announced as the halftime performer last month, but the move has drawn backlash from conservatives, some of whom objected to the NFL choosing a Spanish-speaking artist. In response, groups like Turning Point USA have even announced plans for a “counter halftime show.”

Critics’ complaints overlook one key fact: Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, and Bad Bunny — born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio — is indeed an American citizen under the Jones-Shafroth Act of 1917.

Shaboozey also praised the NFL’s growing international footprint, pointing to its expanding schedule that now includes games in Brazil, England, Germany, and beyond. “Football’s such a beloved sport — why not take it to other places?” he said, referencing his brother Myles Smith’s halftime performance at the NFL’s Dublin matchup between the Minnesota Vikings and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The rising country crossover star knows the pressure of a major halftime stage himself. In 2024, he performed at the Detroit Lions’ Thanksgiving Day game and later joined Beyoncé and Post Malone for the Christmas Day “Beyoncé Bowl” halftime show during the Texans vs. Ravens matchup.
