Massachusetts Unveils Finalists for New State Flag, Seal, and Motto

Written by on 09/16/2025

Big changes are coming to Massachusetts. After more than four years of debate and design work, the state is officially moving toward adopting a brand-new flag, motto, and seal—and voters now have three finalists in each category to weigh in on.

The Massachusetts Seal, Flag, and Motto Advisory Commission reviewed more than 1,150 public submissions before narrowing the field. The final designs honor the state’s Indigenous history, natural landscape, and role as the sixth state to join the Union.

According to Boston.com, the nine options aren’t set in stone just yet. Kate Fox, executive director of the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism, explained that the designs could still change after public feedback. Over the next few months, the state will host community meetings where residents can share opinions before the commission makes its final recommendation on Dec. 15.

Flag Options

  • A gold star with waves, symbolizing the coast.

  • A flower on a blue field, celebrating natural beauty.

  • A circle of feathers on crimson, reflecting Indigenous heritage.

Motto Options

  • “Multa Voces, una res publica” (“Many Voices, One Commonwealth”), highlighting diversity and unity.

  • “We honor all life guided by the First Light,” paying tribute to the Wampanoag and other Indigenous tribes.

  • “Bono publico laetamur” (“We Rejoice in the Public Good”), adapted from The Beverly Public Library.

Seal Options

  • “Lighting Our Way Forward,” with a sun rising over hills and water.

  • “Peace With Liberty,” featuring a white star, chickadee, and North Atlantic right whale.

  • A crimson-and-feather design, with six turkey feathers and a diamond symbol tied to Indigenous culture.

Residents will get the chance to voice their opinions before Massachusetts locks in the designs that will represent the state for generations to come.
