James Comey Indicted on Federal Charges After Trump Pushes DOJ to Act

Written by on 09/25/2025

WASHINGTON — Former FBI Director James Comey was indicted Thursday on charges of making false statements and obstruction, just days after President Donald Trump publicly urged his attorney general to prosecute him and other political rivals.

The move makes Comey the first high-ranking former official to face criminal charges tied to one of Trump’s longest-running grievances: the FBI’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Trump has long slammed the Russia probe as a “witch hunt” despite multiple intelligence reviews confirming Moscow interfered in his favor. While the investigation led by special counsel Robert Mueller didn’t prove criminal collusion between Trump’s campaign and the Kremlin, it did show the campaign welcomed Russia’s help.

Political Pressure on DOJ

The indictment comes as critics warn that the Justice Department, now led by Trump ally Attorney General Pam Bondi, is being politicized. Trump has been openly pressuring Bondi to charge Comey and others he considers enemies. Just last weekend, he blasted her on Truth Social for “delays,” demanding prosecutions and even floating one of his personal attorneys, Lindsey Halligan, for a top federal prosecutor role.

The case was filed in the Eastern District of Virginia, an office already shaken after its top prosecutor resigned under pressure to bring charges against New York Attorney General Letitia James, another frequent Trump target.

What Comey Is Accused Of

Comey’s charges don’t involve the substance of the Russia investigation itself. Instead, prosecutors claim he lied during a 2020 Senate hearing, when he denied ever authorizing anyone to leak information to reporters about the case.

Comey, who was fired by Trump in 2017 after refusing to pledge personal loyalty to the president, has been one of Trump’s most outspoken critics. The former FBI director has repeatedly described Trump as “ego driven” and even compared his style of leadership to that of a mafia boss.

High Stakes for Justice and Politics

The indictment underscores how deeply political battles are colliding with the justice system. By bringing Comey to court, the Trump administration is not only reigniting the bitter fights over the Russia investigation but also testing the independence of the Justice Department itself.
