Alabama State President Stands Up for Plus-Size Dance Group ‘Honey Beez’ After Announcer Makes ‘Inappropriate & Offensive’ Comment During Halftime Show: ‘The New Face of Ozempic’

Written by on 09/29/2025

Fans and alumni are speaking out after Alabama State University’s Honey Beez — the beloved plus-sized dance team — were targeted by an offensive comment during Saturday’s football matchup against Florida A&M University at Bragg Memorial Stadium.

According to WCTV, as the Honey Beez left the field, longtime FAMU band announcer Joe Bullard allegedly quipped that the dancers were

“the new face of Ozempic.”

The remark quickly spread on social media, sparking outrage and debate.

ASU President Dr. Quinton T. Ross Jr. condemned the comment as “short-sighted” and “demeaning.”

In a statement, he emphasized,

“While we recognize the spirit of competition, there is no place for disparaging or demeaning remarks directed at our scholars.”

He added that both the SWAC commissioner and FAMU’s leadership stood in agreement with his stance.

Ross also uplifted the Honey Beez and the Mighty Marching Hornets for their commitment and artistry:

“Please know that you are celebrated, valued, and admired for the joy you bring to Hornet Nation, and for the bold and fearless way you represent the very best of ASU.”

FAMU President Marva Johnson issued an apology soon after, calling the announcer’s words

“During the halftime of the Florida A&M University vs. Alabama State University football game, an inappropriate and offensive remark was made by a Marching 100 announcer. On behalf of Florida A&M University, I extend my deepest and sincerest apologies to the Honey Beez, the Mighty Marching Hornets, President Quinton Ross, and the entire Alabama State University community.”

FAMU President, Marva Johnson

Johnson praised the Honey Beez as a squad that “represents discipline, school pride, and performance tradition respected across the nation,” and promised accountability and preventative steps to ensure incidents like this don’t happen again.
