Trump Slams Obama’s Nobel Win After Losing His Own Nobel Peace Prize Bid

Written by on 10/12/2025

Donald Trump has taken a fresh swing at Barack Obama’s legacy — this time targeting the former president’s 2009 Nobel Peace Prize win just as his own campaign for the award fell short.

“He got it for doing nothing. Obama got a prize — he didn’t even know what — he got elected, and they gave it to Obama for doing absolutely nothing but destroying our country,” Trump said.

Obama received the Nobel Peace Prize just eight months into his first term. At the time, outlets like The New York Times called the honor “very premature,” arguing that the prize “should have a higher bar.”

“I’ve stopped eight wars, so that’s never happened before,” Trump continued. “But they’ll have to do what they do. Whatever they do is fine. I know this: I didn’t do it for that, I did it because I saved a lot of lives.”

A September poll found that only 22% of Americans supported Trump receiving the Nobel, including less than half of Republicans.

Why Trump Believes He Deserved the Prize

This year, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the 2025 Peace Prize to María Corina Machado, a Venezuelan opposition leader recognized for her fight for democratic reform against Nicolás Maduro’s regime.

Trump, however, argued during a UN General Assembly speech that his efforts to end “unendable wars” around the globe merited the honor.

White House communications director Steven Cheung doubled down after the announcement:

“The Nobel Committee proved they place politics over peace,” Cheung said on X. “President Trump will continue making peace deals, ending wars, and saving lives. He has the heart of a humanitarian, and there will never be anyone like him who can move mountains with the sheer force of his will.”

MAGA Conservatives React

Several Trump allies reignited their criticism of Obama’s Nobel win in the wake of Trump’s exclusion.

“President Obama was given a Nobel months into his Presidency without ending any wars. President Trump has now ended EIGHT wars,” said Katie Miller, wife of Trump advisor Stephen Miller.

To date, only four U.S. presidents have won the Nobel Peace Prize: Teddy Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Jimmy Carter, and Barack Obama. Trump, meanwhile, has continued to frame his foreign policy record as historic — even if the Nobel Committee disagreed.
