Pols Show Economy Tops Voters’ Concerns as Inflation, Job Cuts Fuel Nationwide Anxiety

Economic worries dominated Tuesday’s elections, with most voters in Virginia, New Jersey, California, and New York City citing financial struggles, inflation, and high living costs as their top concerns, according to preliminary AP Voter Poll findings.
Despite President Donald Trump’s return to the White House on promises to curb inflation and boost growth, voters say they still feel stuck — burdened by high prices, slowing job growth, and the ongoing federal government shutdown.
In Virginia, where Abigail Spanberger won the governor’s race, half of voters said the economy was the most important issue. Many cited Trump’s federal spending cuts as directly affecting their families.
New Jersey voters were most concerned about property taxes and utility costs, while New Yorkers pointed to the rising cost of housing as the city’s biggest problem.
Across all states, roughly 6 in 10 voters described themselves as “angry” or “dissatisfied” with the country’s direction — a clear sign that economic frustration outweighs cultural and political divides heading into the 2026 midterms.
