Nancy Pelosi Ends Historic Four-Decade Run in Congress

It’s the end of an era for San Francisco politics. Nancy Pelosi, one of the most influential figures in modern U.S. history, has announced she will not seek reelection in 2026, marking the close of a nearly 40-year congressional career.
In a video message to her San Francisco constituents, Pelosi, 85, declared:
“I will not be seeking reelection to Congress. With a grateful heart, I look forward to my final year of service as your proud representative.”
Pelosi made history as the first woman to serve as Speaker of the House, holding the gavel from 2007–2011 and again from 2019–2023. Her tenure saw major legislative victories including the Affordable Care Act, landmark climate bills, and critical infrastructure reforms.
Speaking directly to her home city, she added:
“San Francisco, know your power. We have made history. We have made progress. We have always led the way, and now we must continue to do so.”
Her decision comes as Democrats push for a new generation of leadership. The race to fill her deep-blue San Francisco seat is already underway, with progressive organizer Saikat Chakrabarti and state senator Scott Wiener among the early contenders.
Pelosi’s leadership has been praised across party lines — even her political rivals have acknowledged her skill and tenacity. Former President Barack Obama called her “one of the best speakers the House has ever had,” while Newt Gingrich once said she may be “the strongest speaker in history.”
Pelosi also played a pivotal role during some of the most turbulent political moments in recent memory — from the Jan. 6 Capitol attack to two impeachments of former President Donald Trump.
In her farewell message, she reflected on her decades of service:
“There has been no greater honor for me than to speak for the people of San Francisco.”
As she prepares to step down in January 2027, Pelosi says she hopes her successor continues to carry the “power of San Francisco” — a legacy of activism, progress, and political influence that helped shape the nation.
