Donald Glover Revealed That He Suffered A Stroke Last Year

Written by on 11/23/2025

Glover shared the revelation onstage at Tyler, the Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw festival, where fan-shot footage captured him detailing a series of medical emergencies that forced him to shut down his world tour.

“I had a really bad pain in my head in Louisiana, and I did the show anyway,” Glover said. “I couldn’t really see well, so when we went to Houston, I went to the hospital, and the doctor was like, ‘You had a stroke.’”

Glover said the moment hit him hard, joking that his first thought was, “Here I am still copying Jamie Foxx,” referencing Foxx’s 2023 stroke. But quickly, the weight of the diagnosis sank in. “The first thing was like, ‘I’m letting everybody down.’”

The stroke wasn’t his only health scare. Glover went on to reveal he broke his foot, required surgery, and then received even more unexpected news from doctors.

“They found a hole in my heart,” he said. “So I had this surgery, and then I had to have another surgery. They say everybody has two lives, and the second life starts when you realize you have one. You should be living your life how you want. If we have to do this again, it can only get better.”

Those health issues explain the abrupt halt to his The New World Tour in 2024. Glover first canceled U.S. dates in September before pulling the plug entirely the following month.

In a since-deleted post, he told fans: “After my show in New Orleans, I went to the hospital in Houston to make sure of an ailment that had become apparent. It became clear I would not perform that night, and after more tests, I could not perform the rest of the U.S. tour in the time asked. As of now, I have surgery scheduled and need time out to heal.”

“My path to recovery is something I need to confront seriously,” he added. “With that said, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the remainder of the North American tour and the UK and European dates.”

Glover’s artistic alter ego, Childish Gambino, has defined an era — six albums, five Grammys, and a cultural footprint few can match. But last July, he confirmed the moniker is officially nearing retirement.

“It really was just like, ‘Oh, it’s done. It’s not fulfilling,’” he told The New York Times. “I just felt like I didn’t need to build in this way anymore.”

With Glover now describing his health challenges as a wake-up call, fans are watching closely as he enters what he calls his “second life.”
