DJ Quik’s Son Found Guilty in 2022 Los Angeles Murder, Faces Up to 40 Years

Written by on 12/06/2025

David Marvin Blake Jr., the son of G-Funk legend DJ Quik, has been found guilty in connection with a deadly 2022 shooting in Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced Thursday (Dec. 4) that a jury convicted Blake of second-degree murder and shooting from a motor vehicle for the killing of 31-year-old Julio Moises Cardoza Jr.

Cardoza was gunned down on May 25, 2022. Blake, now awaiting sentencing, faces a maximum of 40 years in prison. His sentencing hearing is set for February 6, 2026.

According to prosecutors, the incident unfolded after a fight between Cardoza and another man in Downey, CA. Blake, positioned nearby, allegedly opened fire from a vehicle—hitting Cardoza several times before fleeing the scene. Cardoza later died at the hospital. Blake was arrested the following day, and his bail was set at $2 million.

Before the conviction, Blake had been carving his own path in music and appeared on DJ Quik’s 2014 album The Midnight Life. He was also working as a liaison for Compton City Councilman Issac Galvan at the time of the shooting. Galvan was removed from office in 2022 after pleading guilty to election-related bribery tied to cannabis permitting.

Blake’s sentencing remains scheduled for February 6, 2026.
