Former ‘Lion King’ Star Imani Dia Smith, 26, Tragically Killed — Boyfriend Charged With Murder As Community Mourns

Written by on 12/25/2025

Just days before Christmas, tragedy struck the Broadway community. Imani Dia Smith — best known for her captivating performance as Young Nala in Disney’s The Lion King on Broadway — has died at age 26. Authorities say her boyfriend has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with her death.

Police in Edison, New Jersey responded to a call around 9:18 a.m. on December 21 reporting a stabbing. When officers arrived, they found Smith with multiple stab wounds. She was rushed to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, according to the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Two days later, on December 23, authorities arrested 35-year-old Jordan D. Jackson-Small. He now faces several serious charges, including first-degree murder, second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon.

Smith’s death has left her family and the theater community devastated. Her aunt, Kira Helper, organized a GoFundMe to support Smith’s parents, Monique Rance and Rawni Helper, who are now caring for Smith’s three-year-old son and her dog, Kuro. Funds will help with funeral costs, legal expenses, therapy for the family, and other unexpected needs.

“Imani had her whole life ahead of her,” her aunt wrote. “She was a vivacious, loving and fiercely talented person… The joy and light she shared with the world will never be forgotten.”

Smith’s mother, Monique — a respected hair stylist in film, TV, and Broadway with more than 25 credits — is now navigating unimaginable loss while caring for her grandson. As of publication, the GoFundMe has raised over $60,000, surpassing its $50,000 goal, as supporters rally to honor Imani’s life and legacy.
