Texas Rising: Jay G Is Building More Than Music — He’s Building Legacy
Written by b87fm on 05/29/2026
In an era where authenticity matters more than ever, Texas artist Jay G is proving that real stories,
consistency, and dedication to the grind still matter in hip-hop.
Hailing originally from the small town of Kosse, Texas before later moving to Waco, Jay G
represents a Southern hustle mentality deeply rooted in family, resilience, and independence.
Known as one half of the duo MISTA C4 & Jay G, the artist has quietly been building momentum
while crafting a sound inspired by legendary Southern icons and timeless hip-hop influences.
During a recent interview with HipHopSince1987, Jay G opened up about his upbringing, musical
inspirations, and long-term vision for his career. He spoke about growing up surrounded by
multiple genres including rap, R&B;, blues, and country music — influences that helped shape his
versatile approach to creating records.
Jay G also emphasized that his artistry goes beyond rapping. In addition to performing, he
produces beats and engineers vocals, giving him creative control over his sound and allowing him
to evolve into a complete independent creator. He cited influential artists such as Tupac, Pimp C,
and Z-Ro as major inspirations behind his work ethic and mentality toward the music business.
The Texas artist first made major noise with his 2017 project Ballad Of A Hustla, a release
centered around ambition, struggle, and survival. Since then, Jay G has continued expanding his
catalog while preparing new music, including Ballad Of A Hustla 2 and a collaborative project with
MISTA C4.
Momentum has continued building around his records as well. His track “Way of Life” featuring
Mikey surpassed 50,000 streams, while “Bigger in Texas” alongside MISTA C4 gained radio
attention, further helping establish his name within the growing Texas hip-hop scene.
Outside the music, Jay G says fatherhood and family remain central to his life and motivation.
Long term, the artist hopes to build his own studio and create generational wealth through music,
eventually passing the business down to his son.
That entrepreneurial mindset reflects a long-standing tradition within Texas hip-hop culture — a
region known for independence, ownership, and artists building movements outside the traditional
industry system. From Houston’s legendary Rap-A-Lot Records legacy to today’s new wave of
independent Southern artists, Texas continues to produce creators focused on longevity rather
than trends.
With new projects in development and his brand steadily growing, Jay G appears focused on
turning independent momentum into a lasting legacy.
