Universal’s upcoming Snoop Dogg biopic continues to fill out its roster of Hip-Hop heavyweights, and the latest casting comes with some serious musical lineage of its own.
As perVariety SwayvoTwain, the son of late R&B legends D’Angelo and Angie Stone, has been tapped to portray The Notorious B.I.G. in Snoop. Born Michael D’Angelo Archer II, SwayvoTwain is a recording artist and songwriter whose music blends elements of Hip-Hop, soul and R&B. While he has already begun carving out his own lane musically, portraying Christopher Wallace will mark his first major film role. The casting also adds another interesting layer to a movie already packed with actors portraying some of the most recognizable figures from Hip-Hop’s 1990s era.
Although Biggie became the face of Bad Boy Records and East Coast Hip-Hop while Snoop rose to superstardom through Death Row Records on the West Coast, the two MCs maintained a mutual respect for one another before Biggie’s death in 1997. Their respective stories also became intertwined with one of the most turbulent periods in rap history, giving Wallace an obvious place within a film chronicling Snoop’s rise.
Outer Banks star Jonathan Daviss will lead the film as Snoop Dogg, while the supporting cast is quickly starting to look like a who’s who of ’90s Hip-Hop. Myles Bullock will portray Dr. Dre, Camron Jones has been cast as Tupac Shakur, Algee Smith will play Warren G and Tre Hale will step into the role of Death Row Records co-founder Suge Knight. Lauren London will portray Snoop’s late mother, Beverly Tate, while Laya DeLeon Hayes will play his wife, Shante Broadus.
The ensemble also includes Olly Sholotan as Kurupt, Corey Champagne as Nate Dogg and Jonica Booth as The Lady of Rage. Along with SwayvoTwain’s casting, Bentley Green has joined the film as RBX, while Los Angeles rapper G Perico will portray Big Reecie Cup, further filling out the circle of artists and personalities connected to Snoop’s early years in Long Beach and Death Row.
Craig Brewer, whose credits include Hustle & Flow and Dolemite Is My Name, is directing the project from his rewrite of a screenplay originally penned by Black Panther co-writer Joe Robert Cole. Snoop Dogg is also producing the film alongside Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer, Allan Mandelbaum and Death Row Pictures president Sara Ramaker. The project is set to incorporate music from Snoop’s extensive catalog.
Simply titled Snoop, the film is being positioned as the definitive big-screen telling of Calvin Broadus Jr.’s journey from Long Beach to becoming one of Hip-Hop’s most recognizable figures. Universal Pictures currently has the biopic scheduled to hit theaters on August 6, 2027.
