Memphis Honors Tay Keith With Permanent Music Production Space

Memphis is building a permanent music lab to keep Tay Keith’s legacy alive for the next generation of producers.

Memphis just gave Tay Keith the recognition he deserved on what would’ve been his 30th birthday.

The city declared September 21 as Tay Keith Day and handed over the keys to the city, honoring the legendary producer who shaped modern Hip-Hop from the ground up.

Mayor Paul Young and the Memphis community came together to celebrate a life that changed music forever.

The real magic happened when Memphis Public Libraries announced the Tay Keith Music Lab, a permanent space dedicated to keeping his creative spirit alive.

This isn’t just some memorial plaque situation. The Keith family partnered directly with the library system to build something that actually matters for the next generation of producers and beat makers coming up in Memphis.

Dr. Eric D. Harris, the director of Memphis Public Libraries, made it clear this project represents something bigger than nostalgia.

The Music Lab connects young creatives to the tools and knowledge that made Tay Keith legendary in the first place. It’s about preservation, education, and making sure Memphis stays a hub for music innovation.

The Tay Keith Legacy Initiative includes way more than just the Music Lab itself.

They’re rolling out a Beat Making 101 curriculum so kids can learn production from the ground up. An archival collection is being preserved as part of Memphis and Shelby County’s historical record.

The 901Voices oral history initiative will capture stories and context that keep his influence alive for real.

“Today we keep our beloved Tay Keith’s memory and profound work alive by unveiling the Tay Keith Music Lab in partnership with Memphis Public Libraries. This space will connect his legacy to creation and focus on future generations of young DJ, producers and music moguls to come. Through an archival collection preserved as part of the historical record of Memphis and Shelby County along with 901Voices oral history initiative, all of these elements will serve as a living legacy where future creators can work, where history can be preserved, and a permanent record where Tay’s story can continue to be heard. We feel he would be so proud of this community effort and being able to continue impacting the young creatives in Memphis, which was always a big part of who he was as a person in both his life and music.”

Tay Keith’s production credits read like a greatest hits album that shaped an entire era of rap and Hip-Hop.

He produced “Sicko Mode” for Travis Scott, a track that became absolutely massive and earned him a Grammy nomination in 2019. More recently, he got nominated again in 2024 for “Rich Flex,” proving his relevance never faded.

His work with Drake and Travis Scott established him as one of the most sought-after producers in the game.

On June 18 of this year, Tay Keith passed away at just 29 years old from an accidental drug overdose involving ketamine and kratom compounds.

The loss hit the music community hard because his influence was still growing and his best work might’ve still been ahead of him. Memphis lost one of its greatest exports, but his catalog and now this Music Lab ensure his impact continues.

Mayor Paul Young emphasized that this project reflects Memphis’s commitment to nurturing its music culture and keeping the city relevant in Hip-Hop’s future.

The city understands that Tay Keith wasn’t just a producer. He was a symbol of Memphis’s ability to produce world-class talent that influences global culture.
